Festivals and Culture
Like most Canadian cities St. Catharines and the Niagara region do not skimp out when it comes to culture and festivities. One of St. Catharines more well known festivities is the Niagara Wine Festival, a festival that showcases what the regions many lush vineyards have to offer in terms of their many fine wines. The Niagara region is famous for its wine and vineyards making it the ideal location for such a cultural event to take place.
As well as wine festivals St. Catharines has also hosted a folks art festival in the Montebello park for forty-seven years! The Folks Arts Festival is known as "everyone's festival" and is a great way for people to show off their ethnic and cultural dances and various rituals to other interested passerby. The Folks Arts festival is a great way to experience a 'stew' of all sorts of folk arts by being immersed into various arts all at once in a beautiful melting pot known as Montebello Part in Downtown St. Catharines.

Economic Activities
Currently St. Catharines is in a flurry of economic growth spanning from new cancer centres, to a Brock University family health and bioscience centre are a few of the projects currently in the midsts. In addition St. Catharines like most of the CMA's relies upon a service based economy. Retail, accommodation and food services, and health care comprise for most of the work force. However due to our consumeristic ideals St. Catharines like most cities is unfortunately a not very sustainable city.
However in efforts to contradict this city government has installed the aptly named Tending The Garden City initiative that is meant to curb instability and move cities on to a sustainable track. Hopefully other CMAs will use St. Catharines as a role model to better the lives of their constituents and residents. The strategy outlines that the best way to fight instability is to work together and tackle issues like poverty, resource scarcity and infrastructure. For further information on Tending The Garden City I encourage you to read the strategy on this link.
Youth unemployment (~20%) and unemployment rates surge above the provincial average as well as economic growth. This is a key issue for the city of St. Catharines if it wishes to be sustainable.
